An economic stimulus plan was given by Obama explaining that schools in America will get $ 4.35 billion to improve. The initiative will help those wanting to “improve schools and close the achievement gap” with the “Race to the Top” program. Nine new “Race to the Top” winners are announced to share this round’s $ 3.4 billion grant, according to the U.S. Department of Education: The amounts going to Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island and Washington D.C. can be announced later on. A later round with $ 350 million at stake for states that create new means of student assessment is still to come.
‘Race to the Top’ winners aren’t the only reformers
States needing money have been inspired by the “Race to the Top” grant. There were many moves for states to try and win “Race to the Top.” Two of these include no cap on spending for charter schools and giving more accountability directives straight to the teachers. Round 2 of this was applied for by 35 states and also the District of Columbia. Of course, there were in July 19 finalists which were selected. So far, 46 states and also the District of Columbia have applied for “Race to the Top.”.
State education leaders and teachers unions against programs
”Race to the Top” can’t please everyone. It hasn’t been approved universally. ”Race to the Top” was a big concern, says MSNBC, because state officials didn’t want the government coming in and taking control over schools. Also, the correlation between teacher evaluations and student standardized performance wasn’t something teachers unions liked the idea of.
Changing some stuff in America
Is seems like things are good. This is especially true with the outlook. A statement was given by Democrats for Education Reform. This showed most of what the public opinion is on the “Race to the Top” program going on. The statement addresses numerous civil rights and child advocacy groups and local business. The statement said the move was a fantastic and bold one that should have been done. The statement expressed the desire to have teachers unions work better with these groups to get a result desired by everybody in American schools.
