The Credit card Accountability, Responsibility and Disclosure (CARD) Act has a component that addresses the marketing towards college students with charge cards. College is an increasingly costly undertaking, and numerous a student has wanted for debt relief upon graduation having to pay back the cash lenders that helped finance their education as well as high credit card premiums. Barriers were put up to protect student credit scores by the State University of New York system, or SUNY, which is really 68 campuses that network public universities.
Marketing not loved by SUNY
CNN explains that SUNY made it nearly impossible to market on any campuses that support SUNY. Mario Cuomo supervised this. He is the State Attorney General. Charge card companies cannot get advertised in State University of New York schools. The only way for a student to get the data is via written consent. Also, schools can’t receive any funds for doing so. Cuomo has recommended all universities in New York schools adopt the very same reforms. Marketing from charge card corporations can be monitored. In fact, the university will make sure to control it.
Students vulnerable
Charge card debt has shown that college college students are very vulnerable. Sallie Mae found that the average college student carries more than $4,000 in charge card debt upon graduation, on top of their unsecured personal loans to finance college. Numerous college students end up paying off these debts by just dropping out of school. They even get loan refinancing occasionally to help with credit scores. Employers tend to check out credit scores which means any student who hurt it with charge card debt may be looking at a longer time before getting a good job.
The American Dream becoming a debt nightmare
The American Dream of going to college, getting a good job and making a start in this world is getting further out of reach for the middle class. The cost of tuition going up is making this harder.
